John Blake

John makes unique tactile and functional wood-turned products in his Pembroke workshop.

He enjoys using local woods including ash, sycamore, oak, yew and alder. The items he produces range from bowls to cutlery to candlesticks, and he teams up with ceramicist Mena Williams to create unique wooden bases for her tea lights and lamps.

The seed was sown for John’s love of the art of woodturning when he was a 14-year-old schoolboy, “before the days of health and safety”.

He said: “We were shown a wood lathe and tools, given a lump of wood and told to have a go!

“This experience was enough for me and saw me continue turning after school, even woodturning in New Zealand in the 1970s which gave me a love for the many hardwoods found there.”

John went on to become one of the founder members of Pembrokeshire Woodturners back in 2005. He has also tutored for councils and colleges, and given demonstrations around Wales.
